Study Mate was launched in 2007 as a national teacher’s strike recovery initiative. Study Mate was one of the first combined initiatives in the history of the diverse newspaper groups, spurred by a collective understanding that the education crisis sparked by the strike had far reaching and potentially devastating impacts to the learners affected. As students had been deprived of formal education for six weeks, it was regarded as an imperative that they be given an opportunity to catch up on the sections of the syllabus that had been missed during this period. This was particularly acute for the Grade Twelve’s who were preparing for their school leaving (Matric) certificates.
The success of this initiative is apparent in the fact that Study Mate was continued by the Department of Education in 2008, as well as the fact that all parties involved in the initiative collectively won the World Association of Newspapers' World Young Reader Prize in the Public Service category last year.
